“There’s gems in those flowers,” he whispered. “Diamonds!” I shook my head at the wizened old man as he hopped from foot to foot exhorting me to buy his bunch of wilting daisies.

“Believe me, lady,” he murmured, holding out a stem. “They’re there…but only you will see them.”

His voice trailed away and he swept a hand across a tired, dirt-streaked face. Pulling out a wad of small bills, I offered them in exchange for the boldest and brightest of the flowers. A giant magenta blossom dusted with sunshine pollen that begged me to look in closely.

And that is when I saw them. Nestling at its black heart, a sprinkling of diamonds, refracting the day’s light. I looked up in amazement to thank him but the wizard was gone.
